At the frozen roof of the world of Fenris, amid the storm-wracked Mountains of the Maelstrom, dwell the thunderwolves, apex predators so vast and terrible that they have more in common with some armoured beast of old Terra than with any common wolf. Their coats are as tough as matted wire, their jaws strong enough to bite through steel, and only the boldest and mightiest of the Space Wolves would ever dream of mastering one.
To capture and break such a beast is said to be a rite reserved for the upper ranks of the Wolf Guard, a feat of will and strength that few survive and fewer master. Those who succeed forge a bond with their mount that runs deeper than mere obedience, a fellowship of mutual respect between two apex hunters, and the warrior may see his thunderwolf girded with adamantium jaws, iron-shod claws and hidden strength-augmenting frames until it becomes a war-engine of flesh and steel.
In battle the Thunderwolf Cavalry strike like a landslide given purpose, closing the distance with impossible speed before crashing into the foe amid a chaos of hooves, fangs and swinging frost blades. The Imperium keeps no formal record of them, for the beasts are reckoned semi-sentient aliens and the Chapter is careful to deny that it rides such creatures to war, yet across the Fenris Sector the tales persist of glorious charges that shattered whole enemy formations in moments.
