Darnath Lysander is the First Captain of the Imperial Fists, master of the Chapter's veteran 1st Company, Overseer of its Armoury and Watch Commander of the Phalanx, the vast star-fortress that serves as the sons of Dorn's mobile home. He is a figure of near-mythic stubbornness even among his notoriously obstinate brothers.
Unusually for the Astartes of the 41st Millennium, Lysander was recruited on Terra itself. The road that carried him there was one of hardship and loss: a thirteen-year pilgrimage begun by his parents before his birth, beset by betrayal, enslavement and the murder of his family, out of which the future captain emerged hardened into something unbreakable. Rising through the Imperial Fists, he stood at the death of Captain Kleitus and from his dying hand received the Fist of Dorn, a thunder hammer once wielded by the primarch himself.
His defining ordeal came at the hands of the Iron Warriors, the Imperial Fists' most hated foes. When his vessel translated back into realspace amid Chaos-held territory, it was ambushed, and Lysander and a handful of survivors were dragged to the daemon-haunted fortress world of Malodrax to be tortured. The Warsmith Kraegon claimed the Fist of Dorn as a trophy, but he could not break its bearer. Enduring torments that would have shattered any mortal mind, Lysander at last won free, reclaiming his sacred hammer during the Scouring of Malodrax.
That he returned at all, unbowed after so long in the enemy's grasp, only deepened his legend. Lysander fights as a living bulwark, the anchor of any line he holds, wielding the Fist of Dorn and a storm shield with grim, tireless resolve. Wherever the Imperial Fists must mount a defence that cannot be allowed to fail, it is Lysander who holds the breach, an immovable rock amid the carnage against whom wave after wave of the enemy is dashed to ruin. In him the defining virtue of the Imperial Fists is made flesh: the refusal, whatever the cost, ever to yield.
