A Space Wolf becomes a Grey Hunter once the reckless fires of his youth have burned down to a steady, controlled heat. Having survived his years as a Blood Claw and learned the hard lessons that only battle can teach, he takes his place among the true backbone of the Chapter, a warrior still eager for the fight but now possessed of the judgement to know when to charge and when to hold.
Grey Hunters form the largest part of any Great Company, versatile warriors equally at home laying down bolter fire or wading into a melee with blade and axe. Unlike the tactical squads of Codex Chapters they scorn heavy weapons in favour of specialist close-combat gear, reflecting the Space Wolves' abiding preference for settling matters at arm's length. Each carries the pack-markings he first bore as a Blood Claw, a living record of a brotherhood forged in youth and unbroken by the passing centuries.
Confident, cunning and utterly self-reliant, a pack of Grey Hunters can be trusted to fight without close direction, seizing the initiative and exploiting every weakness the foe reveals. They are the warriors upon whom a Wolf Lord relies to win the day, neither the raw enthusiasm of the young nor the grizzled specialism of the old, but the balanced killing edge of the Chapter in its prime, and it is from their ranks that the veterans and heroes of tomorrow are drawn.
