Lamenters

A sorrowful, star-crossed brotherhood sprung from the blood of Sanguinius, the Lamenters are held to be the unluckiest Chapter in the Imperium, forever seeking to atone through selfless sacrifice even as ruin stalks their every crusade.

Raised during the ill-omened Twenty-First Founding, an event so blighted that later ages named it the Cursed Founding, the Lamenters carry the gene-legacy of the Blood Angels and, through them, of the murdered angel Sanguinius. Alone among many of their cursed-born peers, by some means unknown even to their own apothecaries, they seemed largely spared the Black Rage and the Red Thirst that torment their forebears. Yet what they were denied in madness they paid for in misfortune, for a shadow of tragedy has clung to them since their earliest days.

A fleet-based Chapter without a settled homeworld, the Lamenters clad themselves in mourning-black and deep golden yellow and took as their creed a doctrine of noble self-sacrifice, placing the lives of ordinary citizens above their own. That very idealism proved their undoing in the Badab War, when misplaced loyalty led them to stand with the secessionist rebels against the Imperium. Defeated, they were spared annihilation only on condition that they undertake a penitent crusade lasting more than a century.

That crusade delivered them into catastrophe. Steering into the path of the Tyranid Hive Fleet Kraken, the Chapter was ground down to a scattered handful of survivors, one of several occasions on which the Lamenters were dragged to the very brink of extinction. Under masters such as the grim and enduring Malakim Phoros they fight on regardless, bearing their grief with a quiet dignity that has made them beloved of the common soldiery even as fate conspires, again and again, to break them.
