Before an aspirant may be counted a full battle-brother, he must serve among the Scouts of the Tenth Company, the proving ground of every Codex-adherent Chapter. Their bodies not yet bearing the final gene-implants and their training incomplete, Scouts nonetheless fight on the Imperium's front lines, learning the craft of war in its most demanding forms.
Forgoing the heavy plate of their elders for lighter carapace armour, Scouts specialise in stealth, reconnaissance and the sudden ambush. They range ahead of the Chapter's main strength to map enemy positions, sabotage vital targets and silence sentries, striking from concealment with sniper rifles, combat shotguns and blades before melting away into the terrain. It is a role that teaches patience, cunning and self-reliance, qualities that will define them for the rest of their long service.
Guided by hardened veteran sergeants who have chosen to shape the next generation, the Scouts are watched closely, each action weighed against the day each will be judged worthy to join a battle company. Many of the Chapter's greatest heroes first proved themselves beneath the shadow of the Tenth, learning in blood and darkness the lessons that would one day make them legends.
