Tyranids

Extragalactic swarms directed by the Hive Mind, consuming worlds through living fleets and specialized organisms bred for different tasks.

Last modified: September 30, 2026

Tyranids are extragalactic organisms directed by the Hive Mind, a collective intelligence encompassing creatures from vast living ships to microscopic life. Their hive fleets consume the biomass of conquered worlds. The Imperium named them after Tyran, a world whose surviving records revealed the aftermath of an invasion that had stripped away its life and seas.[1]

Hive fleets and synapse[edit]

A hive fleet is a body of living vessels and associated organisms. Its smaller creatures are components of a coordinated predatory force, rather than citizens of a conventional empire. The Hive Mind supplies the common intelligence behind that force.[1]

Synapse creatures function as psychic relays for its control. The official introduction to Synaptic Imperatives describes that role directly, before presenting a particular edition's tabletop implementation.[2] Keeping those two layers separate matters: a background explanation of synapse does not establish a current range, dice modifier or exception.

Organisms with different jobs[edit]

The Tyranid range includes swarming Gaunts, specialized ranged organisms, fast predators and large monsters. Termagants and Hormagaunts illustrate different approaches to fighting within the smaller broods, while Hive Tyrants combine leadership with formidable physical power. Biological artillery and airborne creatures broaden the force beyond a single massed charge.[1]

The Norn Emissary and Norn Assimilator show how specific a creature's intended task can be. The 2023 reveal describes the Emissary pursuing valuable commanders or knowledgeable captives, while the Assimilator is sent against a selected creature or fortification. These are distinct mission profiles within the same hive fleet's arsenal.[3]

Adaptation and design[edit]

Adaptation is central to Tyranid identity, but it does not mean every weapon or defensive system automatically becomes useless after one encounter. The studio's 2023 design interview explains adaptation through concrete visual choices: organic support structures, altered limbs and the reuse of successful forms. Older Carnifex and Lictor designs informed newer models rather than being discarded wholesale.[4]

That interview also provides a useful way to inspect a miniature. Compare its silhouette, sensory features and limbs with another organism, then ask what task those differences suggest. This is a design-reading exercise; an inferred function should not be presented as a published capability without a source.

Background and a playable swarm[edit]

The links below lead to individual organisms and named examples. For collecting, decide whether repeated smaller creatures or a few larger subjects suit the project you want to finish. For a game, check the relevant official rules and updates through the rules guide. The dated previews cited here document the faction's background and design, not today's points or army-building restrictions.
