Barbgaunts are a heavier, hunched strain of the swarm's endless gaunt-broods, grown around a single bio-weapon: a barbell-launcher that hurls dense clusters of jagged, gravity-warping spines. On impact these barbs unleash a crushing gravitic pulse that shatters bone, pins soldiers to the ground, and leaves survivors staggering and slow to react.
Deployed in disciplined clutches, Barbgaunts act as the Tyranids' living artillery-infantry, laying down suppressing barrages that fix the enemy in place while faster, deadlier organisms surge in to finish the work. Like all lesser Hive Mind-driven creatures they show no fear and no self-preservation, advancing into fire and loosing their weapons until torn apart. Individually fragile, in numbers they transform the swarm's assault from a simple tide of claws into a coordinated killing machine, denying the foe the freedom to manoeuvre or regroup. Where Barbgaunts fire, the ground itself seems to reach up and drag the living down.
