Biovore

A bloated living artillery beast that lobs drifting spore mines across the battlefield, seeding the enemy's path with clusters of sentient, detonating death.

The Biovore is the Tyranid answer to the cannon, a sluggish and grotesquely bloated organism whose sole reason for existing is to grow and fling explosive spores at the foe. Deep within its swollen body, spore mines gestate until they are ripe, whereupon a violent muscular spasm hurls them skyward through a dorsal orifice to arc across the battlefield.

The spore mines themselves are strange half-living munitions. Buoyed by inflating gas bladders, they do not fall so much as drift down toward the ground, where they linger, mindless yet possessed of crude senses, until they detect the approach of non-Tyranid flesh. Then they close upon their victims and burst with the force of a demolition charge. A single Biovore can nurture several varieties within itself, spitting fragmentation spores to shred infantry, bio-acid to eat through armour, or clouds of raw poison.

For all its ungainly bulk, the Biovore transforms the ground before an advancing swarm into a minefield of its own making, sowing the enemy's likely routes with drifting bomblets that hunt of their own accord. Slow and vulnerable, it is best kept to the rear, where it can lob its living ordnance over the heads of the broods it supports.
