Hive Fleet Jormungandr

A subterranean hive fleet that honeycombs whole worlds with tunnels and armours its bio-ships in asteroid rock, collapsing cities from below before the defenders know war has come.

Contents

Jormungandr, named for the world-encircling serpent of ancient myth, wages its wars beneath the surface of the very planets it consumes. Where other fleets descend from the sky in plain sight, Jormungandr burrows, sending its tunnelling organisms deep into a world's crust to carve out vast subterranean networks long before its presence is even suspected. By the time the defenders grasp what is happening, their cities are already collapsing into sinkholes and their strongpoints are being torn apart from underneath.

This buried approach lets the fleet bypass orbital defences and planetary shields entirely, rendering it maddeningly difficult to detect or bring to battle on favourable terms. Jormungandr compounds the threat by cloaking its bio-ships within captured asteroids, the stone serving as both armour and camouflage as the vessels drift close and unleash ambushes from cover. On the world of Megyre, where towering force pylons had been raised to hold the swarm at bay, the Tyranids simply burrowed through the planet's armoured crust and destroyed the great engines from below.

Worst of all is the fleet's refusal to die. Should an invasion be beaten back on the surface, Jormungandr does not so much withdraw as descend, its broods retreating into the labyrinth of tunnels they have already dug. Ensconced in the deep dark, the fleet becomes all but impossible to root out, waiting with serpentine patience for the moment to rise and feed once more.
