A Warboss sits at the very top of Ork society for the simplest reason imaginable: he is the biggest and the meanest Ork around, and in a culture where size equals authority, that is the only mandate anyone needs. No Ork is born a Warboss. Each one claws his way up through fight after fight, and every victory feeds the strange biology of his kind, packing on muscle and bulk with each foe he flattens, so that the longer an Ork rules, the more physically impossible he becomes to challenge.
A Warboss leads from the front, always, wading into the thickest fighting with the finest wargear his warband can scrounge or steal. Most favour a power klaw, a piston-driven gauntlet that shears through tank armour as easily as flesh, paired with a heavy pistol or kombi-weapon for good measure. Around him gather the trappings of Ork nobility: a bodyguard of Nobz, a gaggle of gretchin hauling his ammunition, and often a vicious pet attack squig that snaps at anything foolish enough to stray near.
Beyond raw muscle, a Warboss radiates something the wider galaxy has learned to dread. His confidence and aggression are contagious, whipping the Orks around him into ever greater heights of violence, and when a Warboss grows powerful enough his sheer presence can swell a squabbling mob into a full Waaagh!, an unstoppable green tide that follows him for no better reason than that he is strong enough to lead it. The day he finally loses a fight is the day it all ends, usually at the hands of the next Ork in line.
