An Overlord stands at the head of a necron military force much as it stood at the head of necrontyr society untold millions of years before the great sleep began. These are nobles of ancient and often formidable lineage, their claim to command rooted not in any democratic notion of merit but in bloodlines, court politics, and the accumulated authority of dynasties older than most galactic civilizations combined. To command as an Overlord is to wield both martial power and the intricate, often ruthless diplomacy of necron high society.
Equipped with some of the finest wargear a dynasty can provide, from resurrection orbs capable of reknitting shattered warriors to devastating personal weapons, an Overlord leads from a position of overwhelming personal capability. They are expected to serve as both a tactical anchor for their forces and a living symbol of the dynasty's resurgent glory, their presence on the field a statement that the empire they represent has not been diminished by its eons of sleep.
Beneath the martial bearing, however, many Overlords carry the same corrosion of personality that afflicts so much of necron nobility, ancient minds worn thin by unimaginable spans of time, prone to obsession, cold cruelty, or unsettling detachment from the very war they are directing. Whatever their inner state, an Overlord's word remains law to the warriors and courtiers bound within their dynasty's chain of command.
