The Rainfather

Rotigus

A Great Unclean One embodying Nurgle's dread generosity, wreathed in an eternal storm of pestilent rain.

Rotigus, called the Rainfather and the Generous One, is a Great Unclean One who embodies the paradox at the heart of his master's worship: that decay and fecundity are one and the same. Where other Greater Daemons of Nurgle are avatars of despair or contagion, Rotigus is the giver of terrible bounty, a mountainous tower of rotting flesh who brings the Plague God's gifts to every corner of the battlefield whether the recipients would have them or not.

Over his vast form hangs Nurgle's Deluge, an endless storm of warm, filth-thick rain that seethes with bacterial life. Wherever Rotigus treads, this putrid downpour follows, drowning arid plains beneath stinking quagmires and rising seas, spreading rot and disease across the land. Yet in that same corruption there is renewal, for the Rainfather's blight makes barren ground teem with new and monstrous life. On worlds where the beasts had grown sterile, his coming set them breeding once more, though what crawled forth was seldom fit to look upon.

Into battle Rotigus bears the Gnarlrod, a gnarled staff that endlessly rots and regrows from seed, forever bringing forth ever-fouler diseases even as its trophies and icons moulder upon it. With it he channels the full generosity of his god, calling down deluges to sweep away the foe and coaxing pestilence and gnarlmaw alike from the poisoned earth. He is as much a force of grim creation as of destruction, planting the seeds of Nurgle's Garden in the ashes of whatever he ruins.

Rotigus has risen high in his master's regard. During the Skull Lands War, when a great blaze kindled near Khorne's Brass Citadel threatened to burn its way back into the heart of Nurgle's Garden, it was Rotigus who conjured the mightiest deluge he had ever loosed and smothered the flames before they could reach his master's domain. For that timely flood the Plague God's favour has flowed to him ever since, and the Rainfather's storms only grow.
