Penitent Engine

A crude war machine housing a Sister so consumed by guilt she chose to be sealed inside it forever, her grief converted into rampaging violence.

Some failures run so deep that even the Repentia's path of bladed redemption feels insufficient, and for these Sisters the convent offers a final, terrible alternative: permanent interment within a Penitent Engine. The machine is crude by the standards of Imperial war-walkers, little more than a stomping armored frame fitted with buzzsaws and heavy weaponry, but it is built to a singular purpose, converting the pilot's unresolved grief directly into unrelenting violence against the enemies of the Emperor.

Unlike a Dreadnought's honored sarcophagus, a Penitent Engine offers no dignity to its occupant, only the promise that her suffering will be given a purpose. Convent chaplains oversee the sealing ritual with grim solemnity, and once interred, a Penitent Engine's pilot fights without any expectation of extraction or repair; the machine is meant to be used until it, and she, are both spent. Battlefield witnesses often describe the muffled screaming audible from within the hull as the engine tears through enemy lines, a sound the Sororitas consider not cruelty but a mercy being fulfilled.
