A Proteus Kill Team embodies the founding principle of the Deathwatch: that against the boundless variety of the xenos, a warrior must himself be endlessly adaptable. Named for a shape-changing legend of ancient myth, such a team is assembled from veteran battle-brothers seconded from a dozen different Chapters, each bringing the traditions and gene-forged strengths of his parent lineage to the black-armoured brotherhood. Within a single squad a stern Ultramarines tactician might fight beside a savage son of Fenris, a taciturn Raven Guard shadow-walker, and a zealous Black Templar, their disparate skills fused into one purposeful whole. This is a formation built for versatility above all else. Its members carry a bewildering array of specialist wargear, from storm shield and thunder hammer to the boltgun loaded with the Deathwatch's prized special issue ammunition, rounds crafted to pierce chitin, dissolve flesh, or burn out the machine. Deployed against a xenos threat, the kill team reshapes itself moment to moment, splitting to hunt through the shadows or massing to deliver a single annihilating strike against the beating heart of the alien menace.
