Where the Imperium counts its history in tens of thousands of years, the T'au measure theirs in mere millennia, and yet in that brief span they have carved an expanding empire out of the eastern fringe of the galaxy. Born on a dying world of storms and starvation, the T'au were lifted from tribal infancy by the mysterious Ethereal caste, whose arrival ended an age of internecine warfare between the T'au's own bloodlines and bound them instead into a single, purposeful civilization. That founding miracle is remembered as the Enlightenment, and it remains the bedrock of everything the empire has since become.
The Doctrine of the Greater Good
Central to T'au society is the philosophy the humans mistranslate as the Greater Good, a code of collective purpose that subsumes individual ambition beneath the needs of the many. Under this doctrine each of the T'au castes, the Air, Earth, Fire, Water, and the guiding Ethereal caste, performs its appointed function without question or rivalry, producing a civilization of startling internal harmony. It is a philosophy the T'au sincerely believe is a gift worth sharing, and one that has proven remarkably effective at absorbing entire alien species into willing, productive citizenship.
That generosity has a harder edge. Where diplomacy fails to bring a world into the fold, the Fire caste's war machines are dispatched to make the offer again in a language of plasma and rail-fire. Kroot mercenary bands, Vespid raiders, and countless other client races now march or fly to war beside T'au battlesuits, testament to an empire that expands as readily through conquest as through persuasion, however its ambassadors might phrase the distinction.
An Empire Built on Technology
What the T'au lack in numbers and antiquity they compensate for with a restless gift for invention. Their forges produce battlesuits, gravitic engines, and energy weapons that rival or exceed the wargear of empires ten thousand years their senior, and their doctrine of continuous refinement means no design is ever considered finished. This technological hunger is matched by an expansionist doctrine called the Tau'va, the belief that the stars themselves are a resource to be organized under a single unifying purpose, sept by sept, until the darkness between them is pushed back by the light of the Greater Good.
The T'au Empire's greatest vulnerability is also its defining trait: an unshakeable certainty in its own righteousness. Ethereals guide every major decision through an authority the other castes never think to question, and this absolute unity of purpose has carried the empire through wars against orks, Imperial battlefleets, and worse. Whether that certainty is wisdom or a very patient kind of blindness remains a question the T'au have never thought to ask of themselves.

HQ
InfantryCadre FirebladeA Cadre Fireblade is a veteran Fire Warrior who has forsaken the honour of the battlesuit to remain among the infantry. A master of the pulse rifle and markerlight, the shas'nel steadies the gunline around them, teaching every trooper to place each shot with lethal precision. In the Fireblade the Fire Caste sees its finest foot soldier made both teacher and leader.
InfantryEtherealThe Ethereals, or Aun, are the enigmatic ruling caste of the T'au, spiritual and political leaders whose word steers the whole Empire toward the Greater Good. Rarely do they take the field, but when an Ethereal walks among the Fire Caste, warriors fight with superhuman resolve rather than fail the master they revere. In dire need they take up the honour blade, emblem of their ancient office.
InfantryKroot ShaperThe Kroot Shaper leads the kindred to war and to the feast beyond it, guiding his people's very evolution by choosing whose flesh they will consume.
BattlesuitT'au CommanderA T'au Commander stands at the summit of the Fire Caste's warrior path, a shas'o whose decades of victory earn the right to pilot the rarest and finest battlesuits. Two patterns are reserved almost exclusively for their use: the heavily armed XV85 Enforcer and the swift, fin-clad XV86 Coldstar. Whichever they pilot, Commanders lead from the front, their brilliance and courage inspiring every warrior around them.
Troops
InfantryBreacher TeamBreacher Teams carry short-ranged pulse blasters into the closest and cruellest fighting, clearing bunkers and boarding hulls at point-blank range.
InfantryFire Warriors Strike TeamThe disciplined backbone of the Fire caste, delivering coordinated pulse rifle volleys under strict tactical doctrine.
InfantryKroot CarnivoresThe Kroot Carnivores are the most numerous of the alien auxiliaries who fight for the Greater Good, savage avian hunters bound to the Empire by an ancient pact. Wielding their distinctive bladed rifles as both gun and spear, they range ahead of the ordered T'au line, and by devouring the flesh of the fallen they graft the strengths of their prey into their own ever-evolving bloodline.
Elites
InfantryCrisis BattlesuitsVersatile piloted war-armor that lets veteran Fire caste warriors mount devastating, endlessly reconfigurable weapons loadouts.
InfantryFiresight MarksmanThe Firesight Marksman is a Pathfinder specialist whose keen eye and marker drones paint the enemy for annihilation before a single shot is fired.
InfantryStealth BattlesuitsCompact, sensor-baffling battlesuits used to infiltrate enemy lines and strike vulnerable targets before vanishing.
BattlesuitXV95 Ghostkeel BattlesuitThe XV95 Ghostkeel is the pinnacle of T'au stealth technology, a battlesuit built to strike from the shadows behind enemy lines. Cloaked in overlapping stealth fields cast by its attendant drone, it is all but invisible even in open ground. A terror weapon as much as a killing machine, it is piloted by a lone shas'vre drawn from the veteran ranks of the Stealth Teams.
Fast Attack
BeastKroot HoundsKroot Hounds are the feral, four-legged cousins of the Kroot, loping ahead of the kindred to run down and savage whatever the hunters mark as prey.
InfantryPathfinder TeamReconnaissance specialists equipped with markerlight designators that guide the devastating fire of allied units.
VehicleTX4 PiranhaThe TX4 Piranha is the lightest and swiftest of the T'au grav-tanks, a nimble skimmer built for hit-and-run warfare, scouting and screening the heavier armour. Crewed by a pilot and gunner and escorted by detachable gun drones, it seems to be everywhere on the battlefield at once, harrying the foe with sudden strikes before wheeling away untouched.
InfantryVespid StingwingsThe Vespid Stingwings are winged, insectoid auxiliaries who serve the Greater Good, swarming down from the skies of their storm-lashed homeworld to fall upon the enemy's flanks. Each bears a neutron blaster whose radiation withers all but the heaviest armour, a weapon only the Vespid can safely wield. They are bound to the Empire through the communion helms that render their alien speech comprehensible to the T'au.
Heavy Support
InfantryBroadside BattlesuitsMassive, slow-moving battlesuits built around twin heavy railguns to serve as mobile artillery on the front line.
VehicleHammerhead GunshipA gravitic tank whose primary railgun can punch through the thickest armor the galaxy's other empires can field.
BeastKrootox RidersA Krootox Rider pairs a hulking beast with a Kroot gunner, lumbering into battle as a living weapons platform that hits like a siege engine.
VehicleTX78 Sky Ray GunshipThe TX78 Sky Ray is a missile-defence variant of the Hammerhead, its railgun turret replaced by a bristling array of seeker missiles. Guided by the markerlights of T'au Pathfinders, it rains precise destruction upon tanks and aircraft alike, granting Fire Warrior teams the heavy firepower their pulse weapons cannot provide. Born in the Damocles Crusade, it remains a mainstay of every Hunter Cadre.
BattlesuitXV104 Riptide BattlesuitThe XV104 Riptide is the largest and most powerful battlesuit in the T'au arsenal, an Earth Caste masterwork raised to counter the deadliest enemies of the Greater Good. Standing twice the height of a Crisis suit, it is driven by an experimental Dark Matter Nova Reactor and armed with a heavy burst cannon or ion accelerator. First unleashed at Mu'gulath Bay, it remains a rare and prized war-engine.
Flyer
FlyerRazorshark Strike FighterThe Razorshark is a swift T'au strike fighter that screams over the battlefield, raking enemy formations with ion fire before the foe can react.
FlyerSun Shark BomberThe Sun Shark Bomber sails over the enemy to release its pulse bombs, then looses a pair of interceptor drones to guard the skies it has just scarred.

Characters
Aun'ShiThe Aged WonderAun'Shi is among the most storied Ethereals in the T'au Empire, an Aun of the martial sept of Vior'la whose skill with the honour blade is matched by no other of his caste. Bearing the honour stave Fidelity, he has fought at the forefront of countless battles, inspiring the Fire Caste to victories beyond reckoning. His lone defence of the settlement of Fio'vash against a horde of Orks is recounted across the Empire as proof that even a spiritual leader may be a peerless warrior.
Aun'VaFather of the Greater GoodThe eldest and most revered Ethereal in the empire, whose word carries near-absolute authority over T'au civilization and war.
Commander BrightswordChampion of the EnclavesCommander Brightsword is one of the Eight, the elite battlesuit war-council of the Farsight Enclaves, and among the most aggressive close-combat commanders the T'au have ever fielded. Where the Fire Caste prizes distance and firepower, Brightsword closes with the foe and carves through the enemy with his fusion blades. Behind the name lies a strange secret, for the original Brightsword died long ago, and each warrior who has since borne the title is a clone grown by the Earth Caste scientist O'Vesa.
Commander FarsightThe Lost CommanderA brilliant but defiant Vior'la commander who vanished beyond the empire's borders and founded a breakaway realm of his own.
Commander LongstrikeTerror of T'rosShas'la T'au Sha'ng, known to friend and foe alike as Longstrike, is the most celebrated tank ace the Fire Caste has ever produced. A prodigy from his first day at the controls of a Hammerhead, he earned his war-name amid the deserts of T'ros and has since felled targets as mighty as an Imperial Titan. Chosen to trial the experimental XV02 pilot battlesuit, he now fights fused to his gunship, yet still prefers to survey each battle with his own eyes from the cupola.
Commander ShadowsunThe Void ShadowA celebrated battlesuit commander whose patient, calculating leadership has made her one of the empire's most trusted military minds.
DarkstriderThe Outcast of the Fire CasteDarkstrider, born El'Myamoto, is a maverick Fire Caste officer who has repeatedly refused promotion in order to remain among the Pathfinder cadres he loves. Ranked shas'el yet fighting from the front of the reconnaissance screen, he is a peerless tactician of ambush and improvisation whose disregard for protocol has won him as many enemies within his own caste as without. It was Darkstrider who unmasked and destroyed an Imperial Assassin sent to slay Commander Farsight.

Subfactions
Bork'an SeptBork'an is the foremost seat of learning in the T'au Empire, its systems crowded with universities, laboratories and the deep-void observatories of the Earth Caste. From this scholarly sept came breakthroughs such as the stasis field and the first piloted battlesuit, and its Fire Warriors march to war bearing the finest experimental armaments the Empire can produce. Its cadres fight with cold, measured patience, trusting that a lesson learned in the laboratory will be repaid a hundredfold upon the battlefield.
Dal'yth SeptDal'yth is the beating heart of T'au commerce, a First Sphere world whose culture is dominated by the silver-tongued merchants and diplomats of the Water Caste. More cosmopolitan than any other sept, its worlds teem with aliens of a hundred species who trade, treat and dwell alongside the T'au. It was Dal'yth's envoys who bound the Demiurg to the Greater Good, and its markets are counted among the Nineteen Wonders of the Empire.
Farsight EnclavesThe Farsight Enclaves are a cluster of fortress-worlds beyond the Damocles Gulf, ruled by the renegade Fire Caste hero the Imperium names Commander Farsight. Severed from the wider Empire and forbidding all Ethereals within their borders, the Enclaves keep to the old warrior traditions and trust the blade and the battlesuit above the words of any spiritual master. To the T'au they are the Forbidden Zone, a heresy that endures; to their own people they are a free realm guarded by the finest commanders alive.
Sa'cea SeptA sprawling and populous sept whose vast manufactories and shipyards keep the empire's war machine supplied.
T'au SeptThe homeworld sept and spiritual capital of the empire, birthplace of the Ethereal caste's founding vision.
Vior'la SeptA volcanic frontier sept renowned for producing the empire's most aggressive commanders and battlesuit pilots.
