Lioness of the Parch

Tahlia Vedra

Supreme commander of Hammerhal Aqsha's armies and the finest mortal general of the age — a strategist beloved by her soldiers, who rides a tamed manticore to war.

Tahlia Vedra earned her name the long way: decades of campaigning across the Great Parch of Aqshy, rising from the powder-burned ranks on merit alone, in a career with no famous ancestors and no shortcuts. Her soldiers' stories agree on the essentials — that she has never ordered a march she would not make herself, never spent lives to make a report read better, and never lost the ledger in her head where every casualty is written.

Her mount is the plainest statement of what she is. Infernadine is a manticore — a man-eating terror of the Parch that no rational doctrine lists as tameable — and Vedra broke her to the saddle through patience, nerve, and a refusal to be eaten that eventually became mutual respect. The sight of the Lioness riding a monster of the wild dark beneath a Freeguild banner tells every soldier in Hammerhal Aqsha exactly what she expects of the impossible: that it can be drilled, saddled, and put to work.

The story every Steelhelm tells — in a version that changes with each telling — is that Sigmar's heralds once offered Vedra the storm, and that she declined reforging to remain what her armies are: mortal, singular, and unrepeatable. True or not, the tale is believed, and belief is strategy. The free peoples will follow immortals into battle, but they will follow Tahlia Vedra somewhere harder — back into the dark, again and again, for as long as her one life lasts.
