The Valkyrie is a twin-engined, vertical-takeoff assault carrier that serves the Astra Militarum as both gunship and troop transport. Its crews are drawn from the Aeronautica Imperialis and lent to the Guard as the need arises, ferrying airborne regiments such as the Tempestus Scions and the Elysian Drop Troops into battle.
It is a well-armed and manoeuvrable craft. The nose typically mounts a multi-laser, which may be swapped for a lascannon, and a heavy bolter hangs in each side door, with rocket pods a frequent addition. Durable armour, powerful engines and stable handling make the airframe a favourite for a broad range of battlefield tasks, from fire support to rapid extraction.
Troops leave a Valkyrie in several ways. When it hovers low they may simply jump clear, fast-rope or rappel down; when it must stay high, they brave the perilous descent by grav-chute. Because airborne assault is as dangerous as it is decisive, commanders tend to load these carriers with the finest soldiers available, veterans and Scions whose skill can seize a key objective before the enemy realises the strike has begun. In the Valkyrie the Guard finds the speed and reach that its plodding infantry columns can never possess.
