Valerian Devine was a scion of the fallen house of Molech, a Knight whose name became a curse upon loyalist lips for his part in the betrayal that opened his world to the Warmaster. Raised in the wealth and privilege of House Devine, Valerian embodied the decadence that had rotted the ancient house from within, a proud and ambitious warrior who came to see his oaths to distant Terra as chains rather than sacred bonds. When Horus came to Molech, Valerian was among the foremost of those who cast aside their fealty, seduced by the Warmaster's promises and by the dark bargains his house had long kept in secret.
In the battle for Molech, Valerian turned his Knight against the loyalist defenders and against those of his own kin who kept faith, and his treachery helped deliver to Horus the prize he had crossed the galaxy to seize. He fought thereafter in the Warmaster's service, his war-suit's chivalric heraldry now a hollow mockery of the honour it had once proclaimed. To the loyalist houses he was proof of how easily nobility curdled into corruption, a scion who had traded the accumulated honour of generations for the empty promise of glory. The Faithless, they named him, a lord of a house whose very name had become a warning.
