There is no more wretched fate for a servant of the Dark Gods than to become a Chaos Spawn. Every champion who spills blood in the name of the Ruinous Powers courts their attention, and every mutation and gift is a step toward either apotheosis or oblivion. When the blessings come faster than the flesh can bear, or when a warrior's ambition outstrips the favour he has truly earned, his body betrays him, boiling into a shapeless horror of fangs and tentacles that retains nothing of the mind it once housed.
For the World Eaters, the Spawn is a constant and terrible warning. A Berzerker who kills and kills yet never rises, whose devotion Khorne judges wanting, may feel the Butcher's Nails and the Blood God's regard curdle within him until he collapses into a slavering thing. Such creatures are beyond command and beyond reason, driven only by a dim and endless hunger to destroy. Their brethren neither mourn nor pity them; instead they herd the Spawn toward the enemy as living weapons, content that even in mindless ruin the damned thing may spill a little more blood before it is put down. It is the shadow that hangs over every warrior of the Legion, proof that the path of the Blood God offers glory and damnation in equal measure.
