The Custodian Guard formed the core of the Legio, and even they were anything but common soldiery. Clad in auramite plate and bearing the guardian spear — a master-forged weapon that was bolter and blade in one — a single Custodian could hold a breach against numbers that would drown a squad of Astartes. They fought as individuals rather than as a drilled unit, each trusting the others' skill absolutely, their formations loosening and tightening with an intuition born of centuries at their brothers' sides. In the Great Crusade they were rarely seen beyond Terra, but during the Heresy the Custodian Guard walked openly to war, and those who faced them learned that the golden warriors were no ceremonial ornaments but the deadliest infantry the Imperium possessed. Where they advanced, the enemy died in near silence, and the ground they claimed did not change hands again.
