Khymerae

Khymerae are half-real shadow-beasts hauled from the webway, flickering horrors that fling themselves at the foe on the leashes of their beastmasters.

The Khymerae are among the eeriest creatures in a Drukhari menagerie, beasts that are only partly of the material world at all. Dragged howling from the shadowed byways of the webway, they exist as flickering, half-real things, their bodies seeming to slip between substance and darkness so that blows pass through empty air where a heartbeat before there was snarling flesh.

Beastmasters value the khymerae as swift and expendable killers, loosing them ahead of the pack to overwhelm the enemy in a tide of claws and gnashing maws. What they lack in cunning they make up for in ferocity and in the sheer difficulty of striking a foe that is never entirely present, and many a warrior has emptied his weapon into a khymera only to be borne down by it an instant later.

No one among the Drukhari pretends to understand what the khymerae truly are, and few care to. They are useful, they are terrifying, and they can be replaced with another foray into the webway's depths. That is enough for the beastmasters, who treat these shadow-hounds with the same careless cruelty they show every other living thing.
