The Contemptor Dreadnought of the Ultramarines housed a legionary too valuable to surrender to death, a hero of Ultramar whose body had failed but whose mind and martial genius were preserved within an armoured sarcophagus. These ancients had often fought across the entire span of the Great Crusade, and their counsel was prized as highly as their firepower, living archives of the Legion's doctrine given a second existence in adamantium and ceramite. The Contemptor's advanced atomantic systems permitted a genuinely aggressive stride, allowing these war-engines to advance into the heart of a fight rather than sit as static gun platforms. When the Heresy woke them from their long vigils, many an interred Ultramarine found the galaxy he had helped to build now tearing itself apart, and turned centuries of accumulated skill against the very brothers he had once fought beside.
