The Avenging Son

Roboute Guilliman

The Horus Heresy

The statesman-primarch who built Ultramar into a realm apart, and who answered the Heresy by holding a shattered Imperium together with his own hands.

More than any of his brothers, Roboute Guilliman understood that an empire won by the sword must be held by something greater than the sword. Recovered on Macragge and raised among its ruling class, he became the consummate warrior-statesman of the Great Crusade, a primarch who conquered worlds and then, unlike so many of his kin, stayed to make them thrive. The five hundred worlds of Ultramar were his masterwork, a self-sustaining realm of law and industry and disciplined arms that many across the Imperium regarded as its most perfect province.

When Horus fell, Guilliman's answer was neither rage nor despair but method. He drove his gene-sons to war against the rebellion with the same rigor he brought to statecraft, only for the Word Bearers to spring their long-planned trap at Calth, gutting his muster and staining his certainty in brotherhood forever. Cut off from Terra by the Ruinstorm and unable to learn whether his father yet lived, he made the most perilous decision of his life, raising Imperium Secundus so that civilisation might survive even the death of the first Imperium. It was an act that skirted the appearance of treason in service of the deepest loyalty, and it revealed the truth of the Avenging Son, that he would rather bear the weight of holding everything together than watch the Emperor's dream fall into ruin.
