Every legionary was drilled to fight as one component of a combined-arms machine, shifting between fire support, close assault, and holding actions without a moment's hesitation or confusion. Guilliman's doctrines granted even the humblest sergeant the initiative and understanding of an officer, so that a Tactical Squad cut off from command could still act with purpose toward the wider plan. It was this depth that made Ultramar's armies so formidable and so numerous, and this depth the traitors sought to destroy at Calth. Where their line held, the Legion held; where a single squad refused to break, an entire traitor advance could be stalled long enough for vengeance to gather.
