A Brother-Captain stands among the very greatest warriors of the Grey Knights, second in rank and prowess only to the Grand Masters who rule the Chapter. To each is given command of an entire brotherhood, some hundred of the finest daemon-slayers in the galaxy, and with that honour comes a startling measure of independence. In matters of strategy and the conduct of a campaign, a Brother-Captain answers to no one, not even the Grand Master he serves, for his judgement is trusted absolutely.
Such autonomy is earned through centuries of unflinching war. A Brother-Captain leads from the forefront of the fighting, never from safety, planting himself shoulder to shoulder with his brethren against the foulest terrors the empyrean can vomit forth. His presence steadies the line and turns wavering courage into iron resolve, an example of discipline that his warriors would die before they betrayed.
Beyond raw martial skill, a Brother-Captain is a gifted psyker who reaches out with his mind across the din of battle. Through this silent communion he feels the ebb and flow of the fight, sensing where the line bends and where death gathers, so that he may summon reinforcements to the exact spot at the exact moment they are needed. It is this union of blade, will and foresight that has raised captains such as Arvann Stern into living legends of the Chapter.
