Vorth Mordrak

Vorth Mordrak is a Grand Master of the Grey Knights and Admiral of the Fleet, holding command over the Chapter's void-borne assets and the brotherhood that bears them to war. Yet it is not his rank that has made his name a byword for grim resolve, but the terrible tragedy that follows him and the spectral host that will not let him fall.

In the year 920.M41 the renegade Astartes known as the Company of the Shadow seized the Imperial fortress world of Mortain, intending to defile it with a great ritual that would remake the planet as a daemon world. Before the corruption could be completed a fleet of Red Corsairs led by the arch-traitor Huron Blackheart arrived in orbit and, mistaking the world for one still wholly in enemy hands, unleashed a devastating fusion-bombardment upon it. The fires consumed defender and invader alike, and when the ash settled a single Grey Knight yet lived: Vorth Mordrak, sole survivor of his brotherhood's annihilation.

But Mordrak did not walk away alone. Ever since that day, whenever the Grand Master stands upon the brink of death, ghostly warriors clad in silver armour appear at his side to shield him from the killing blow. These are the Ghost Knights, the spirits of the brethren slain upon Mortain, bound to their surviving master by the sheer force of his psychic will. Whether they are true souls dragged back from death, warp-born revenants, or something stranger still, none can say, but they fight with all the fury of the living and vanish once the danger has passed.

Mordrak's every campaign is shadowed by grief and driven by a single, unquenchable purpose. He has sworn a solemn oath to lay his murdered brothers finally to rest, and he knows that this peace can be bought only with the death of the one responsible for their doom. And so the haunted Grand Master hunts Huron Blackheart across the stars, certain that when the Tyrant of Badab at last falls beneath his blade, the Ghost Knights may find their long-denied rest.
