The Gorgon's Shadow

Gabriel Santar

The Horus Heresy

First Captain and Equerry to Ferrus Manus, Gabriel Santar was the Gorgon's shadow and instrument, who survived the Isstvan V massacre to inherit a Legion bereft of its guiding will.

As First Captain and Equerry to Ferrus Manus, Gabriel Santar was the Gorgon's shadow and his instrument, the warrior trusted to translate a primarch's cold will into the movements of an entire Legion. He shared his master's contempt for weakness and his faith in iron, and he wore the augmetics of long service as proudly as any badge of rank, a commander forged in the same unbending mould as the father he served.

Santar stood near his primarch through the long crusade and into the trap at Isstvan V, and he witnessed the catastrophe that unmade the Legion: Ferrus Manus struck down, the loyalist host butchered upon the black sand, the Xth's certainties collapsing into grief and rage. As one of the senior officers to survive the massacre, the burden of what came next fell partly upon him, a Legion without its primarch, its clans scattered, its discipline curdling into a blind hunger for vengeance. Santar embodied both the Iron Hands' strength and their tragedy, a commander superbly equipped to enact a will greater than his own, suddenly bereft of the one certainty around which his whole existence had been built.
