Belisarius Cawl is among the oldest beings in the Imperium of Man, an archmagos whose consciousness has endured for roughly ten thousand years, sustained across the ages by a monstrous accretion of augmetics that has swollen him into a towering, many-limbed edifice of steel and sacred machinery. In him the human origin has been all but obliterated, subsumed beneath spider-like limbs, integrated weapons, and vast cogitator arrays that house one of the sharpest intellects mankind has ever produced.
Cawl's defining obsession is the endeavour he refers to only as the Great Work, a project of such scale and secrecy that few beyond him fully comprehend it. Its most celebrated fruit is the creation of the Primaris Space Marines, a new generation of transhuman warriors he laboured over for millennia in fulfilment of a charge laid upon him, so it is said, by the Primarch Roboute Guilliman himself in the earliest days of the Imperium. When Guilliman returned from his long stasis to find the Imperium besieged, it was Cawl who presented him with these new legions and the arms to equip them.
To the orthodox priesthood of Mars, Cawl is an abomination. His willingness to innovate, to create wholly new patterns of technology rather than merely recover the old, strikes at the deepest taboos of the Cult Mechanicus. He is whispered to have consorted with forbidden knowledge, preserved dangerous secrets, and violated the sacred doctrines that govern what a Tech-Priest may create. Yet his achievements are so profound, and his usefulness to the embattled Imperium so great, that even his enemies cannot simply discard him.
Beneath his cold, calculating exterior, Cawl is driven by an arrogance and a curiosity that border on the reckless. He gambles with technologies others would destroy, tinkers with the very substance of humanity, and pursues his goals across spans of time that reduce empires to footnotes. Whether he is the saviour who will drag the Imperium back into the light of progress or a hubristic meddler whose ambitions will doom it, none can yet say. What is certain is that Belisarius Cawl has already reshaped the fate of mankind more profoundly than any other Tech-Priest in ten thousand years, and the Great Work is far from finished.
