Among the strangest of the Skitarii breeds are the Pteraxii, warriors rebuilt for the vertical battlefield. Where their earthbound kin march in disciplined ranks, the Pteraxii Skystalkers take to the air upon powerful flight packs, their augmented forms wrapped in aerofoils and stabilising vanes that let them wheel and dive like carrion birds. From the heights they observe the enemy with predatory patience, choosing the moment to plummet upon an exposed flank or a lightly held objective.
The Skystalkers are built for the swift, savage strike rather than the grinding firefight. Each carries a flechette weapon that hurls a blizzard of razored darts, ideal for scything down massed infantry, while many wield taser goads whose electric bite fells even armoured foes with a single convulsive touch. Just as telling are the trailing streams of chaff and disruptor filaments they scatter in their wake, fouling the aim and sensors of those who would shoot them from the sky.
In battle the Pteraxii function as harassers and claim-takers, striking where the enemy is weakest and vaulting away before retribution can gather. They seize watchtowers, cut off retreating stragglers and sow confusion in rear echelons, their sudden descents heralded only by the scream of thruster-jets. To the soldiers who face them, the Skystalkers are a horror from above, a reminder that under the Omnissiah's cold gaze there is no safe direction from which death may not come.
