Contemptor Dreadnought

The Horus Heresy

An interred zealot who wages war as endless devotion, his Contemptor hull a shrine to the faith for which he refused to die.

The Contemptor Dreadnought of the Word Bearers entombed a legionary whose faith was too fierce to be quieted by mere mortality. Interred within the atomantic sarcophagus of a Contemptor chassis, such a warrior fought on as an act of eternal devotion, his ruined body sustained by the engine so that his zeal might continue to serve the Legion for centuries more. The hulls of these ancients were graven with the litanies and holy symbols of Colchis, turning each war-engine into a striding shrine, and the interred were revered as living saints of the Legion's belief. The Contemptor's swift and aggressive gait suited the Word Bearers' fervour, letting these dreadnoughts hurl themselves into the thickest fighting where their example might inspire the faithful around them. After the Legion's fall, the prayers rasping from their vox-grilles were offered to the dark gods, and the ancients waged holy war upon the very Imperium they had once been raised to build.
