Mortificator Clade

The Horus Heresy

Ritual executioners who hunt the enemy's champions to claim their heads, a grim brotherhood whose funereal craft unsettles even their own kin.

Grimmest of all the XIX Legion's brotherhoods, the Mortificator Clade practised a cold and ritual form of war that unsettled even their own kin. Where the wider Legion killed from necessity, the Mortificators killed as executioners, hunting the enemy's champions and commanders through the chaos of battle to claim their heads as grim tokens of a debt repaid. They moved as silently as any son of Corax, but there was a deliberate, funereal patience to their craft, a sense that each kill was a sentence carried out rather than a blow struck in anger. Some within the Legion regarded the clade with unease, for their fascination with death sat uneasily beside Corax's ideals of liberation and mercy. Yet none could deny their lethality, and in the vengeance-haunted years after Isstvan V, when the Legion's grief curdled toward something harder, the Mortificators found their grim discipline more welcome than it had ever been before.
