The Legion Tactical Squad provided the flexible foundation upon which every Raven Guard operation was built, line legionaries trained to a versatility that suited their Legion's fluid, unconventional way of war. Unlike the immovable battle-lines of the Imperial Fists or the massed advances of other Legions, a Raven Guard tactical squad fought to manoeuvre, using speed, cover, and superior positioning to strike where the enemy was weakest and withdraw before he could bring his strength to bear. Every legionary was schooled in the arts of infiltration and ambush, able to operate in dispersed order far from support and to melt into terrain that other Legions would have crossed in the open. This made them ideal for the raiding campaigns Corax favoured, harrying an enemy across a whole warzone rather than meeting him head-on. When the Heresy reduced the XIX to a fraction of its number, this same adaptability let a handful of tactical squads accomplish what should have required whole companies.
