The Traveller, Herald of Nurgle

Typhus

Typhus is the most infamous living son of the Death Guard, a towering figure of rot and ambition who serves as Nurgle's foremost herald. Once First Captain of the Legion, he now wanders the galaxy spreading plagues without number, his corrupted body playing host to a monstrous swarm of daemonic insects. Where he treads, worlds sicken and die, and new pandemics are born to honour the Grandfather.

The First Captain

Typhus rose to prominence in the earliest ages of the Legion as its First Captain, a commander of formidable will and grim capability. From the beginning he was marked by an appetite for power that set him apart from his more stoic brethren, and it was this ambition, as much as any external force, that would shape the terrible destiny of the Death Guard. Accounts of the Legion's damnation place him at the very centre of the catastrophe, a figure whose choices helped seal his brothers' fate.

Herald of the Destroyer Hive

Whatever the truth of his role in the Legion's fall, Typhus emerged from that crucible transformed beyond even the standards of his rotting kin. His body became the dwelling place of the Destroyer Hive, a monstrous, chittering swarm of daemonic flies and insects that boils forth from his ravaged chest and swirls about him in a living cloud. He is less a man now than a mobile hive, a walking nest of pestilence through which Nurgle's will is made manifest.

This fusion of warrior and swarm makes Typhus one of the deadliest heralds the Plague God has ever loosed upon the stars. The insects that dwell within him carry contagions of unimaginable variety, and he can unleash them in choking, devouring storms that strip flesh from bone and reduce whole formations to feverish ruin. In battle he wields a great manreaper scythe, cutting down foes with brutal, unhurried strokes while his hive does its silent, spreading work.

The Traveller

Unlike many of his brethren, Typhus does not confine himself to the great campaigns of the Legion. He roams the galaxy almost ceaselessly, earning the name the Traveller, seeking out worlds ripe for corruption and gifting them with new and terrible diseases. He is a sower of pandemics on a galactic scale, and it is said that many of the deadliest plagues to ravage the Imperium can be traced back to his passing. To Typhus, every populous world is a garden waiting to be seeded, and he tends them with the patient malice of a true servant of Nurgle.

Ambition and Devotion

Typhus occupies a curious place in the hierarchy of Chaos, at once utterly devoted to Nurgle and endlessly ambitious for himself. His relationship with his own Primarch is fraught, coloured by pride, rivalry, and the memory of the Legion's shared damnation. Yet whatever his personal designs, his service to the Grandfather is beyond question. He is the herald who goes before, the bringer of gifts, the living proof of Nurgle's twisted generosity. Across ten thousand years he has spread more death than entire armies, and he shows no sign of tiring, forever wandering, forever seeding, forever faithful to the rotten heart of his god.
