The Death Lord, Daemon Primarch of Nurgle

Mortarion

Mortarion is the Daemon Primarch of the Death Guard, a colossal winged figure of rot and sorrow who commands his plague-ridden Legion in the name of Nurgle. Once a warlord who despised the weak and the supernatural alike, he was broken by betrayal and disease and remade into a towering champion of decay. Grim, bitter, and near-unkillable, he wields the great scythe Silence and reaps worlds without number.

A Bitter Upbringing

Mortarion's origins lie on a poisoned, death-shrouded world where he was raised in captivity by a cruel and powerful overlord. Forced to labour and endure amid choking toxins that would have killed any ordinary being, he grew hardy beyond measure, developing the resistance to poison and hardship that would define both him and the Legion he came to lead. He also grew to hate: to despise tyrants, to loathe weakness, and to harbour a deep and abiding distrust of sorcery and the supernatural, which he associated with the oppressor who had raised him.

He rose in rebellion against that overlord, and though he was on the verge of triumph, final victory was claimed not by his own hand but by another. This bitter, incomplete vengeance left a lasting wound in Mortarion's soul, a resentment at being denied and overshadowed that would echo through the rest of his long and tragic history.

Lord of the Death Guard

Given command of a Legion that shared his stony resilience, Mortarion forged the Death Guard into an army in his own image: dour, disciplined, and all but impossible to kill. He drilled them in endurance and self-reliance, teaching them to march through poison and hardship and to prize the grim virtue of never breaking. He remained wary of the arcane, purging sorcerers from his ranks and trusting to solid, martial strength over the treacherous currents of the warp.

Yet for all his strength, Mortarion carried his old resentments with him, and when the galaxy fractured in civil war he allowed his bitterness to be turned against the father who had found and elevated him. He led his Legion into rebellion, believing he was throwing off yet another tyrant, and in doing so set his sons on the road to damnation.

Betrayal and Rebirth

The great irony of Mortarion's fall is that the man who hated sorcery above all things was delivered into the arms of a Chaos God. Adrift in the warp with his Legion dying around him of an unstoppable plague, the Primarch who prided himself on self-reliance found himself utterly helpless. In the depths of that horror, with his sons rotting and screaming and beyond all aid, he too was forced to bargain with Nurgle for their survival, and for his own.

The price was his transformation into a Daemon Primarch, an immortal champion of the very kind of power he had spent his life despising. Remade in decay, he became a colossal, winged horror wreathed in poisonous fog, his once-proud form given over wholly to the Grandfather's embrace. It was a damnation shaped like salvation, and it bound him to Nurgle for eternity.

The Reaper of Worlds

In the present age Mortarion has returned to the mortal galaxy at the head of his Legion, striding through the ruin of the Imperium to wage war on the realm he once served. He wields the great war-scythe Silence, a weapon fit for a reaper of worlds, and unleashes clouds of contagion so potent that entire armies wither before him. He is a being of immense physical and sorcerous might, near-impossible to destroy, and utterly implacable in the pursuit of his god's designs.

Yet for all his power, Mortarion remains a figure of profound bitterness, haunted by his choices and forever chained to the very forces he loathed. He is the Death Lord, the grim gardener of Nurgle, and beneath his rotting banner the Death Guard march ever onward, spreading decay across the stars in the name of a Grandfather who will never let them go.
