The Cursed Scarab Prince

Prince Apophas

A grasping noble who cheated the Mortuary Cult and was punished with a hideous half-life as a living swarm of flesh-eating scarabs, forever hunting a soul to replace his own.

Prince Apophas was a schemer in life, a Nehekharan noble so consumed by the fear of death that he sought to steal the secrets of immortality from the Mortuary Cult rather than earn them, bribing and murdering his way toward eternity. The priests discovered his treachery and devised a fitting damnation: they cursed him, and when he died his soul was denied both the grave and the afterlife, cast instead into a writhing swarm of carrion-beetles that share a single grasping intelligence.

Now Apophas exists as a living plague of scarabs in the rough shape of a man, holding his form together by sheer force of hateful will, scuttling across the battlefields of the Tomb Kings on a hunt that can never end. For he seeks a soul, any soul strong enough to replace the one he lost, and believes that if only he can devour the right victim he will be made whole and freed from his torment. He is wrong, of course; the curse the priests wove has no such loophole. But an eternity of failure has taught him only to hunt harder, and to the champions and heroes he stalks across the sands, the difference is academic.
