The Undead

The Mortuary Cult

The Mortuary Cult was the priesthood of death in ancient Nehekhara, a powerful order of priests charged with preserving the bodies and preparing the souls of kings for the eternal afterlife the Nehekharans believed awaited them beyond the grave. Masters of embalming, mummification, and funerary ritual, they built the great necropolises and raised the pyramids that still loom over the desert.

When the necromancer Nagash corrupted the arts of the Cult and unleashed his blasphemous magic, the priests' rituals were twisted forever. In the cataclysm that followed, the kings of Nehekhara rose not into paradise but as the undead Tomb Kings, and the Mortuary Cult itself was transformed into the Liche Priesthood, its members granted a horrid immortality to serve their monarchs for eternity.

Now these desiccated priests tend the tombs and animate the legions of the dead, forever seeking to fulfil their ancient covenant. Bitter and tireless, they wield the death-magic that binds their kingdom, ensuring that the will of the Tomb Kings endures long after flesh has turned to dust.
