The title of Kâhl is borne by the general officers of the Leagues, the war-leaders who take command of a Kindred's Oathbands and answer for their conduct to none but the Votannic Council above them. A Kâhl is not born to rank but raised to it, chosen from among the most skilled, level-headed, and dependable warriors a hold can produce. To follow a Kâhl into battle is to trust in a commander whose judgement has been tested many times and found sound.
In the field a Kâhl leads by example, wading into the fighting where the peril is greatest. They go to war encased in heavy void armour of the highest make, shielded further by rampart and shield crests, and they wield armaments that dwarf the weapons of ordinary Kin: heavy combi-bolters of ancestral pattern, plasma axes and blades wrought in the forge-temples, disintegrators, and crushing power gauntlets. Many carry personal force fields or short-ranged teleportation gear, the better to strike where they choose and survive the answer.
Yet the Kâhl's deadliest weapon is not carried in hand. Through the ancestral judgement systems woven into their armour they cast the Eye of the Ancestors over the battlefield, singling out the most dangerous enemies and marking them for destruction, and once a foe is so tallied the entire Oathband turns its fire upon them with cold, mechanical purpose. The greatest of these leaders may rise to the rank of high Kâhl, taking a seat on the Votannic Council and command of an entire Kinhost.
