The Great Necromancer

Nagash

The undying god of death itself — architect of the Ossiarch legions, who would see all life extinguished and every soul enrolled in his silent, perfect empire.

Nagash is death made will and given ambition, the first and greatest of necromancers ascended to godhood over the realm of Shyish. It was he who conceived the Ossiarch Bonereapers, wearied of the mindless shambling dead and the wilful fragility of mortal souls, and set his Mortisan artisans to manufacturing soldiers instead — bodies of sculpted bone poured with distilled, obedient spirit. From his black fortress of Nagashizzar he directs the harvest of the realms, exacting the bone-tithe from every living land and recording each debt in ledgers that outlast the nations owing them. To Nagash the living are simply disorder, brief and greedy and forever leaking the emotion on which the Dark Gods feed; his answer is an entire civilisation of the dead, lawful and tireless and complete. When he takes the field in person, wreathed in the stolen magic of a million graves, whole armies are unmade by his gaze. Slain, he merely reforms in Shyish and begins again, patient as the grave, certain that in the end all things — gods, mortals, and traitors alike — must come to him. He commands the Ossiarch Bonereapers as their god and maker.
