When the XVIII Legion needed to close the distance and bring their fury to bear, they loosed the Legion Assault Squad, jump pack-borne warriors who fell upon the foe with flame-wreathed blades and thunderous zeal. Even in the swift violence of the assault the Salamanders' character showed through: they struck not to win glory but to break tyrants, to shatter the war-engines and command cadres that threatened the innocent, and to place themselves between the enemy and those who could not fight. Many carried master-forged weapons, chainblades edged with drake-scale, hammers that rang like the forges of Nocturne, and wielded them with a craftsman's precision rather than reckless abandon. Through the Heresy's darkest hours the assault squads spearheaded the Legion's rare counterattacks, descending on traitor lines in a roar of burning promethium and proving that even a broken Legion could still bring ruin to those who had betrayed the Emperor.
