Nocturne

Nocturne is the volcanic homeworld of the Salamanders, a Chapter of the Space Marines known for their compassion, their mastery of the forge, and their unyielding resilience. It is a hellish world of constant seismic upheaval, wracked by eruptions and earthquakes so violent that its very geography is reshaped with each passing generation. Rivers of lava carve its blackened plains, and the sky is often choked with ash.

The planet's torment is driven by its errant moon, Prometheus, whose close and irregular orbit racks Nocturne with tectonic fury during a recurring season of cataclysm. The hardy human population survives in scattered settlements built to endure, retreating underground when the tremors come and emerging to rebuild once the earth stills. This endless cycle of destruction and renewal has bred a people of extraordinary toughness and communal loyalty.

From these grim tribes the Salamanders draw their aspirants, and the Chapter dwells among their people rather than apart from them, a rare bond between Space Marines and the mortals they protect. The searing environment has left its mark on their gene-seed, giving them coal-black skin and burning eyes. Skilled smiths who prize self-reliance and the safeguarding of innocent life, the sons of Vulkan see in their brutal, beautiful world a forge that tempers not only steel but the soul.
