No Legion knew the grinding, thankless labour of war as intimately as the IV, the Iron Warriors, the Imperium's unrivalled masters of the siege. Clad in iron-grey plate marked with the black-and-yellow hazard chevrons of the demolisher, they were the warriors the Great Crusade called upon when a fortress had to fall and no swifter method would serve, and they paid for every victory in a currency of blood and time that few other Legions would have tolerated. Theirs was a reputation built not on glory but on grim, mathematical certainty: give the Iron Warriors a wall, and eventually the wall would come down.
Perturabo, their primarch, was a genius of engineering and mathematics recovered from the mountainous city-states of Olympia, a mind that could calculate the collapse of a bastion as easily as another man might tally coin. Yet for all his brilliance he was a cold and bitter soul, convinced that his talents went forever unrecognised and his Legion forever exploited, spent on grinding siege-work while flashier brothers claimed the laurels. This resentment, nursed across decades of thankless campaigning, would prove the lever by which the IV Legion was pried from the Emperor's cause.
Masters of the Siege
The Iron Warriors elevated siegecraft to a science without equal, their art encompassing artillery barrages, tunnelling, breaching, and the patient reduction of any defence mortal hands could raise. Perturabo directed his Legion through a command structure he named the Trident, and beneath his cold genius the IV waged war as an exercise in inevitability, calculating acceptable losses and grinding forward regardless of cost. They took the highest casualties of any Legion and were rewarded with the fewest honours, a grievance that festered in every warrior's heart.
The Weight of Grievance
Scattered across the Imperium as garrison troops and siege specialists, the Iron Warriors came to see themselves as a Legion used and discarded, their sacrifices unmourned and their worth unacknowledged. When Olympia rose in revolt during Perturabo's absence, the primarch's fury was terrible and absolute; he crushed his own homeworld with such savagery that it broke something in the Legion's soul, binding master and warriors together in a shared and unforgivable guilt from which there could be no absolution.
The Iron Turned
When Horus raised his standard, Perturabo brought the IV Legion to the traitors' cause, his grievances at last given a target worthy of them. At his side marched the Iron Circle, a bodyguard of implacable battle-automata built to shield a primarch who trusted no living thing entirely. The Iron Warriors carried their genius for destruction into the Heresy without hesitation, turning their siege-mastery against the very Imperium they had bled to build, and reserving a special and enduring hatred for Rogal Dorn's Imperial Fists, the rival wardens whose defensive artistry they had always been measured against and were now determined to surpass in the breaking.
