The Unbending

Vorlath Caul

The Horus Heresy

The iron-willed Lord Marshal of the Saturnine Cohort, a paragon of Auxilia discipline who held the line for the Emperor at ruinous cost.

Vorlath Caul commanded the Saturnine Cohort through the darkest years of the Age of Darkness, a Lord Marshal whose discipline was so absolute that his own officers half-feared him as much as any enemy. Void-born beneath Saturn's rings and raised in the cohort he would one day lead, Caul embodied every virtue the Solar Auxilia prized: patience, order, and an unwavering resolve that no horror of the Heresy could shake. He was no reckless glory-seeker but a methodical master of the massed battle, husbanding his soldiers' lives with cold care until the decisive moment, then spending them without flinching to win the field.

When the rebellion split the Auxilia, Caul never wavered in his loyalty to Terra, and he led the Saturnine into the bitterest fighting against cohorts that had once been comrades. He is remembered for a series of grinding defensive actions in which his outnumbered soldiers held vital ground against traitor assaults, buying time for the loyalist cause at a cost that whitened his ranks. To his soldiers he was the immovable centre around which the battle turned, a commander who asked nothing of them he would not endure himself. Vorlath Caul asked no quarter and gave none, and the Unbending held his line to the end.
