The Emperor's First Sword

Trajann Valoris

The current commander of the entire Adeptus Custodes order, whose word carries authority second only to the Emperor and the High Lords.

To stand as Captain-General of the Adeptus Custodes is to hold one of the most singular offices in the Imperium, and Trajann Valoris carries it with a gravity befitting a warrior who has stood closer to the Golden Throne than almost anyone alive. He commands not a Chapter or a regiment but the entirety of the Ten Thousand, and by extension holds a seat of enormous unspoken influence within the highest councils of Terra, for when the Captain-General speaks, he speaks with the implicit weight of the Emperor's own household behind him.

Valoris ascended to his rank in an Imperium already fracturing under the pressure of the Great Rift, inheriting command precisely as the ancient law confining the Custodians to Terra was finally broken. It fell to him to reshape ten thousand years of doctrine into something that could function beyond the Palace walls without abandoning what made the Custodians who they are, overseeing the formation of the first Shield Hosts and personally setting the standard for how the Emperor's guardians would present themselves to an Imperium that had, for ten millennia, mostly known them only as rumor and statuary.

In council he is measured to the point of severity, more likely to let silence answer a fool than waste words on one, yet those who have seen him in battle describe a warrior whose martial skill matches or exceeds the legend surrounding his office. He carries this burden alone in a way few can appreciate: the last soul on Terra permitted to enter the Emperor's presence unannounced, and the first to be blamed should anything ever go wrong there.
