The Mortarchs are the supreme lieutenants of Nagash, the God of Death, the chosen deathless generals who command his armies and enforce his dominion across the Mortal Realms. Raised to their station by the Great Necromancer himself, each Mortarch is a being of immense power and ancient cunning, entrusted with a portion of Nagash's own authority over the dead.
The most storied among them include Mannfred von Carstein, the scheming vampire whose ambition and treachery are matched only by his talent for survival, and Neferata, the first and most beguiling of all vampires, a mistress of intrigue who rules the shadowed courts of the undead. Others have risen and fallen across the ages, for Nagash rewards usefulness and punishes failure without sentiment, and even a Mortarch may be broken and remade should they displease their god.
As commanders, the Mortarchs give the Death Grand Alliance a discipline its rivals often lack. Where Chaos squabbles and Destruction rampages, Nagash's Mortarchs can coordinate vast campaigns with cold precision, leading legions of Nighthaunt and Soulblight Gravelords to war. Yet they are far from united. Each Mortarch nurses their own ambitions, and their rivalries and betrayals form one of the great running dramas of the age, a court of immortal monsters forever plotting beneath the gaze of the god who made them.
