The XIV loaded it with the toughest veterans of a Legion already renowned for its resilience and drove it forward at a deliberate, unhurried pace, indifferent to the fire hammering its hull, confident that both tank and warriors would simply weather the storm and arrive. Where swifter Legions raced their Proteus tanks across open ground, the sons of Barbarus used theirs as a slow, inexorable battering ram, a moving fortress that advanced through shellfire and toxin cloud alike until its ramp fell amid the enemy line. The Death Guard did not win their battles quickly; they won them by refusing to stop, and the Proteus was endurance armoured in adamantium, carrying Mortarion's implacable warriors into the grinding close-quarters war they made their own.
