The Grail Reliquae is the most sacred burden a band of Battle Pilgrims can carry — a great palanquin of timber, bone, and gilded relics raised around the mortal remains of a Grail Knight who has passed from the world. Believing his bones still hold the Lady's blessing, the pilgrims hoist the towering shrine onto their shoulders and bear it into the heart of the fighting, and its presence works upon them like a fever. Ordinary commoners become berserk devotees, careless of wounds and death, hurling themselves at the foe in an ecstasy of faith to defend the relic and prove themselves worthy of the saint they carry. The Reliquae grinds forward at the centre of the pilgrim throng, a rallying point that will not retreat and cannot easily be broken, for the men beneath it would sooner die to the last than see it fall. Where it advances, the peasant rabble of Bretonnia fights with a courage that shames many a belted knight.
