Repanse de Lyonesse was a common shepherd-girl of the war-ravaged dukedom of Lyonesse when the Lady of the Lake appeared to her in a vision and set upon her an impossible task: to save Bretonnia in its darkest hour. In an age when the kingdom reeled beneath invasion and its proud knights had all but given up hope, a lowborn maid should have been laughed from the field. Instead, radiant with holy purpose and bearing a blessed banner, Repanse rallied the broken armies of the realm and led them to a string of miraculous victories, her presence alone rekindling courage in men who had forgotten how to win. Knights who would never have deigned to follow a peasant knelt to her as the Lady's chosen, and behind her banner the tide of ruin was turned back. Her tale is Bretonnia's most beloved and most troubling legend, for it proves the Lady's grace answers to faith and not to blood — a truth the kingdom's rigid nobility has always found easier to venerate in a dead saint than to honour in a living peasant.
