The Wanderer

Wulfrik the Wanderer

A Norscan champion cursed by the gods to sail the world forever seeking ever-mightier foes to slay, hurling his challenge in tongues he was never taught.

Wulfrik the Wanderer boasted, once, that he was the greatest warrior in all the world, and made the fatal error of boasting it within the hearing of the gods. They took him at his word and set the terms: Wulfrik would prove it, forever. Cursed and blessed in a single stroke, he was given the power to speak any tongue that lived, so that he might challenge any champion of any people in words they understood, and laid under a geas to keep killing greater foes or be dragged screaming into damnation.

And so he wanders. His dread ship, the Seafang, sails wherever the gods point its prow, crashing through ice and open ocean to deposit Wulfrik upon distant shores, that he might seek out the mightiest warrior there, hurl his ritual challenge, and cut the champion down. Centuries of this have made him perhaps the most travelled killer in the world and among the very deadliest, a grizzled reaver who has slain heroes of every race under every sky. He longs now for an honourable death and an end to the road, and the gods, cruelly amused, will not grant it while he keeps on winning.
