The Free Cities are the great fortified settlements from which the Order Grand Alliance holds and rebuilds the Mortal Realms, beacons of civilisation raised in a world still largely ruled by monsters and Chaos. Founded and defended by Sigmar's peoples, they are the anchors of his reconquest, each a walled bastion where mortals of many kindreds live, trade, and endure together.
A free city is a melting pot unlike anything in the old legends. Within its walls, humans rub shoulders with aelves of Hysh, duardin of the mountain holds, and stranger folk besides, all sheltering behind the same ramparts and marching under the same banner. Their standing armies, the soldiery of the Cities of Sigmar, blend disciplined regiments, black-powder artillery, aelven cavalry, and duardin ironbreakers into a single force, often stiffened by the storm-forged might of the Stormcast Eternals garrisoned within.
Yet the free cities are islands in a hostile sea. Beyond their walls lie untamed wilds, and each city must feed itself, defend its trade roads, and launch the perilous Dawnbringer Crusades that carry civilisation ever outward. Some fall to siege or corruption; others swell into sprawling metropolises of hundreds of thousands. Together they represent the fragile, stubborn promise of the age: that ordinary people, standing together behind high walls, can hold back the dark long enough to build something that lasts.
