Human mutant strain

Navigator

Sanctioned mutants with a third warp-eye, guiding the Imperium's ships through the immaterium by the light of the Emperor's Astronomican.

The Navigators are a stable and ancient strain of human mutant, set apart from all other mutation by their sanctioned and indispensable role in the Imperium. Their defining trait is a third eye set in the brow — the warp eye — through which they perceive the churning tides of the immaterium. To gaze upon this eye unshielded is to risk madness or death, yet through it a Navigator can behold the psychic beacon of the Astronomican and steer a starship safely through the warp.

Without the Navigators, interstellar travel across the vast Imperium would collapse into isolated, crawling voyages, for no ordinary pilot can hope to chart the immaterium's shifting currents. The Navigators are organised into powerful, aristocratic Navigator Houses, ancient dynasties that guard their bloodlines jealously and sell their services to the Imperial Navy, Rogue Traders, and the great ships that bind humanity's realm together. Their gift is hereditary, and their houses wield immense wealth and political influence.

Though branded mutants, the Navigators occupy a privileged and protected station, for the Imperium cannot function without them. Long-lived and physically strange, growing ever more inhuman with age, they are both feared and courted. Aboard every warp-faring vessel a Navigator sits alone in the dark, warp eye open upon the storm, threading humanity's ships through horrors no ordinary soul could survive — the silent, mutant pillars upon whom the whole edifice of the Imperium rests.
